The story

The story of the Piazzo winery began in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, a little village in the municipality of Alba, back in the 1960s.

Armando Piazzo and Gemma Veglia were a couple of young newly-weds from farming families, who decided to carry on their family traditions, investing in a special part of Piedmont, the Langhe, long before it became renowned for its culinary and wine excellence.
It was the area that provided the setting for Beppe Fenoglio’s book “La Malora”, published in English under the title “Ruin”. A place from which people were fleeing due to the post-war agricultural depression. Yet it was this very situation that gave them the drive and determination necessary to set up the Piazzo Winery.

New vineyards

When their daughter Marina and her husband Franco joined Armando and Gemma in running the business, they fell in love with this thriving enterprise which was gradually consolidating its position. Their enthusiasm led to the introduction of improvements and, in 1985, these culminated in the release of the first Barolo, another source of pride for the Piazzo family.
As the winery’s reputation grew, so did the size of the estate, which now covers over 70 hectares, planted entirely with vines, most (but not all) of which are located near the winery. Mango, Neviglie, Guarene and Novello are the towns where the other estate-owned vineyards can be found.

Roots in tradition, an eye on the future

The management of the winery was handed over completely to Marina in 2007 and, together with Franco, she followed in her parents’ footsteps.
It wasn’t long before the couple’s sons, Simone and Marco, having completed their studies at the “Umberto I” School of Oenology in Alba, joined the business and began adding their innovative ideas and techniques to the experience of the previous generations.
Today, the winery boasts the production of the most representative wines of Langhe and Roero tradition. In addition to the aforementioned Barbaresco and Barolo, the range includes Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, Roero Arneis, Langhe Chardonnay, Moscato d’Asti and Spumante Metodo Classico.
